Hey chess fans!

Opening training in Noctie just got better with the launch of our new opening books feature.

Just like before, you can still:

  • quickly pick any named opening to play a game against Noctie in that variation
  • import your own opening book or repertoire containing multiple variations
  • browse among pre-made opening books to learn new openings

What just got a lot better is the creation, browsing and practice experience for all three use cases.

Here’s a summary:

Better practice experience

  • You can now quickly restart a game with an active opening book, without resigning, to drill lines in your opening book in a repeated fashion
  • Noctie will now clearly indicate when you’ve finished an opening variation, or when one of the players have deviated from the opening book (and allow you to go back)
  • The default setting is now to work through all the variations in an opening book in order, based on when you last completed them. This way, you’ll get full exposure of all the lines in an opening book when learning it. You can switch the setting to choose lines randomly, based on number of subvariations, for a more realistic training experience.
  • We’ve added bookmarks: these are specific lines that you can choose to focus on or quickly jump to. This is very useful when you want to study each chapter separately or practice a subset of lines from a larger opening book you created.
  • Opening books can now contain comments and annotations with circles and arrows, for a higher fidelity learning experience when importing your own pre-annotated books or learning from one of our pre-made opening books
  • You can now have multiple opening books active at the same time, to practice your full repertoire
  • You’ll now also see an overview of all the continuations from a given position, as well as a preview of comments for that continuation
  • Bonus moves

Better creation and organization
