Everything Noctie launched in 2024
It’s time to recap 2024 and show our plans for Noctie for 2025. Let’s get started!
🧑🎓 Themes
In March, we released Themes, a new way to organize learning content in Noctie.
Themes are a combination of:
- Instructions – annotated positions or games
- Flashcards – short exercises with right/wrong answers
- Scenarios – positions to play out against the AI
While we designed Themes as a platform for pre-made content creation in Noctie, you can easily make your own Theme and share with your fellow learners.
📖 Opening Repertoires & Selection
We completed a major redesign of how you can use Noctie to practice openings.
- First, we made it easy to quickly select a specific opening to play, by typing the name of the opening and selecting it in a dropdown.
- Secondly, we added Repertoires as a way for learners to import and organize their favourite opening variations.
Repertoires is a powerful feature that serves two purposes:
- It forces Noctie to play specific variations, so that you’ll be guaranteed to get practical playing experience in the positions arising from your repertoire
- It’s a way to memorize the opening repertoire, since the correct moves are highlighted if you lift the wrong piece
Just like Themes, you can easily share your repertoires with others.
Read the guide here to get started with your own Repertoire.
🧩 Redesigned Flashcards
Flashcards, exercises you get from mistakes in your game, have been a very popular feature of Noctie since we launched it over a year ago. However, it was difficult to get an overview of your flashcards and learners felt overwhelmed by the sheer number of unsolved exercises.
In November, we redesigned Flashcards from the ground up, organizing your automatic flashcards into Smart Decks with size limits, adding Static Decks with hand-crafted flashcards, and letting you combine any number of decks into a Smart Queue with an intuitive progress visualization.
🗓️ Daily Flashcard & Weekly Scenario
In September, we added Daily Flashcards – a handcrafted puzzle to solve every day, if you’re looking for a casual reason to come back to Noctie every day. It’s a great way to keep your streak when you don’t have the time to play a full game.
Following that, we added Weekly Scenarios – curated interesting positions to try to beat the AI from. Weekly Scenarios are a great way to challenge your positional chess understanding.

🏆 Experience & Streaks
In August, we started experimenting with new features to keep learners motivated. We added a daily streak feature and an experience gain system.
🎨 New Board & Piece Design + Dark Mode
By popular demand, we added two alternative color schemes for the chess board in Noctie, as well as a choice between Neo and Classical piece sets. We also added the highly requested Dark Mode for our iOS & Android mobile apps (coming soon to web).
💳 Yearly Subscription & Regional Pricing
We introduced discounted yearly subscriptions, for every learner who’s committed to Noctie but wants to save on the monthly cost. At a 40% discount these have been a popular alternative to the monthly subscription. We also introduced regional pricing for our mobile app on App Store / Play Store for selected regions.
And more…
On top of the major features we launched simplified onboarding, increased accessibility for live color feedback via text banners, easier sharing options, and much more, as well as over 100 bugfixes and minor improvements for quality-of-life and customization.
What’s Next?
Here are some of our focus areas for 2025:
Opening Training
We’ll continue the steps we took in 2024 towards making Noctie an invaluable tool for opening training.
Position Setup for Practice
A major use case for Themes today is creating Scenarios to play against the AI. We’ll make this process easier by letting you easily set up positions and customize the playing experience.
Noctie Repertoires, Themes & Decks
We’ll increase the pace in creation of handcrafted Noctie content in the form of inbuilt Repertoires, Themes and Decks – look forward to lots of pre-made learning content!
Better Review & Feedback
The game review feature in Noctie today is rudimentary. We’re planning to extend it, allowing local analysis and variations, as well as giving better AI-generated explanations of mistakes and best moves.
Engaging Playing Experience
Look forward to improvements in playing experience, with more elements of live coaching and interactivity.
Progress Visualization
We’ll add new ways to visualize your progress and keep yourself motivated in your learning journey.
