Master Your Openings: Train Like a Pro with Noctie

Openings are the foundation of every chess game—but memorizing lines isn’t enough. To truly internalize your repertoire and stay sharp over the board, you need active, feedback-driven training. That’s where Noctie comes in.

Noctie is more than just a humanlike chess AI. It’s a powerful tool for interactive opening training that adapts to your level, spots your weaknesses, and helps you improve through targeted repetition.

In this guide, we’ll walk you through how to use Noctie to train your openings efficiently and effectively.

🔧 Step 1: Load Your Opening Repertoire

Start by heading to the Repertoires section in Noctie and press the button CREATE REPERTOIRE. You can now import your own repertoire as a PGN-file that you have created with an external tool like Lichess, Chesstempo, Chessbase or Chessbook.

🤖 Step 2: Practice Against Noctie’s AI

Once your repertoire is ready, you can press PLAY OPENING to practice it against Noctie. This can also be done via PLAY CHESS in Home and select your repertoire in the Opening book section.

Noctie will play the opposite side of your repertoire and follow your chosen lines. Your job? Recall the correct moves and play them. If you’re unsure, you’ll get hints for the correct move when you lift a piece, so that you can strengthen your grasp of the lines.

✅ What makes this powerful?

Instead of raw memorisation of lines, you now get to practice your openings in a set-up simulating a real game. This forces you to think more deeply about the position and grasp the ideas behind each move, while also learning the moves by heart.

📉 Step 3: Learn from Mistakes with Flashcards

After each session, Noctie automatically generates flashcards based on the mistakes you made.

You can go to your Flashcards section and review these critical positions at your own pace—turning every missed line into a learning opportunity.

🔁 Step 4: Repeat with Variation

Training the same line over and over gets stale. When your repertoire contains different choices for the opponent, Noctie mixes amongst lines and to ensure you’re not just memorizing move orders, but actually understanding patterns and plans.

This type of variability training builds real-world robustness in your opening knowledge.

⚙️ Pro Tip: Customize Your Feedback

You can fine-tune Noctie’s feedback system by clicking the three dots next to the board and choose which move quality feedback that will be displayed.

This lets you zero in on what you need to improve, without distractions.

🚀 Conclusion: From Memorization to Mastery

With Noctie, you’re not just memorizing moves—you’re actively engaging with your repertoire in a way that mirrors real-game conditions. The combination of humanlike AI, immediate feedback, and targeted flashcard review makes Noctie an essential tool for opening preparation.

So whether you’re trying to patch up your defenses in the French, sharpen your Najdorf lines, or learn a new gambit—Noctie has your back.
